Character Name: Gambit (has not earned the right to have a last name yet)
Canon: Original

About:
Gambit is the offspring of the witch Nephene and the demon Fioran. She is from the 16th century, specifically the year 1645, when witch hunts were at their highest in England. She lived in the village of Ashwick, a settlement in what would become the Cheshire county.

Gambit is a ten-year-old half-demon witch in training with healed burn scars

Gambit is a very curious little girl with boundless amounts of enthusiasm for learning new things and about the world. She’s shy and insecure on the outside, but once you get her talking she is a bubbly and easily impressed girl. She has a deep seated desire for friendship and family, but is afraid of being rejected by others. Despite this, if she is shown the slightest form of kindness then Gambit is fully willing to take a bullet for you. She’s that attention starved. She gets attached easily despite her fears and anyone she perceives as an outcast or similar to her is likely to get the effects doubled.

Gambit is rather gullible due to her lack of world experience and be easily convinced of something if told with sufficient confidence. This may fade with time and experience, but it will take a while. Gambit is still far too trusting and wanting to look for the best in others. Any discrimination or poor treatment of her will be rationalized as deserved in one way or another.

Gambit leeches off of her own and others negative emotions to form a connection with the large mana pool afforded to her by her demonic side. A large part of why she was raised and treated the way she was stems from this, as the more miserable she was, the stronger her connection with her demonic side would be, among other benefits. Of course, this is largely responsible for Gambit’s cripplingly low self-esteem, mental issues, and doormat tendencies.

Gambit has a years worth of memories sealed away, the incident that took place during this year is responsible for the burns over almost 90% of her body and her missing right eye. The events that occured along with relevent information about the limitations of her immortality and a little about how demons work in her world is rambled on here.

This iteration of Gambit has gotten a familiar contract with a future version of herself that travels and documents timelines, trying to find one where Gambit has a happy ending… to no results as of yet. Noticing the discrepancy of Gambit disappearing from this timeline, she has made a familiar contract with Gambit, but only so that a copy of her consciousness basically hitchhikes on Gambit’s soul to see what happens.

If Gambit returns to her world, she will have the copy removed for its memories, contract broken, and memories erased of the contract happening. This version of her calls herself Deus Ex Machina to differentiate herself, has set up her own room in Gambit’s soul. She only talks to Gambit if Gambit asks for her, and even then prefers to sit back and observe. Deus will likely only ever be encountered if something goes very wrong and Gambit’s soul has to be directly messed with or another character specifically asks to communicate with her. Personality wise Deus is far more cynical and bitter then Gambit, but still retains a noticeable amount of her personality.

Gambit’s abilities and weaknesses include:

Ability to see the flow and use of Mana and is great at Mimicking other supernatural or magical abilities. This aids in learning other types of magic, but is partially responsible for Gambit’s poor eyesight, as she rarely has it off.

Negative emotions of herself and those around her provide extra power. Positive ones and emotions in general do so as well, but not to the extent of the more powerful emotions. The more powerful the emotion is felt, the more power Gambit leeches. It doesn’t increase her Mana reserves so much as helps refill them. Too much negative emotions in large quantities from large amounts of people at once tend to overload Gambit, and cause her magic to go haywire in order to burn off excess MP.

Is talented at Making functional potions of various effects. Potions basically work by putting ingredients into a bottle of liquid of some sort, and infusing magic into it. Any ingredients need to be assigned a trait that will then become what Gambit’s magic permanently associates it as. Like a fish could be designated as gills or water, but once one of those were chosen, ALL fish of that type would be automatically designated as it. It’s a bit like coding in that the more complex the thing the potion is supposed to do the more ingredients need to be put in to specify it. She learned from her mother who used her as an worker to help produce more potions to sell. Gambit knows basic math from this.

She can’t read or write. Her diary instead has seals in it that function as recorders, that just has to have a bit of mana pushed into it to activate it. It’s basically an audio diary full of drawings.

Has the typical innate demon illusion magic, but is abysmal at using it. The slightest scare instantly shatters her illusions.

She gets sunburns like they’re going out of style.

She is able to see events in the past via using items related to the incident as a link to find the event easier and not get overloaded with a whole lifetime of events. Otherwise she has to sift through entire timelines to find the right one and then through said timelines events to find what she is looking for. She’s only ever done that once and was blind for a week afterward. She does sometimes look at some of the weirder ones out of curiosity. Eyesight worsens from overuse and blood vessels can burst and there is a extremely high chance of headaches.

She does have the potential to eventually see the future as well, but it is much more difficult due to along with the timelines she sees all the percent’s of likely occurrences, and tends to have what is essentially a seizure from information overload. She only tried it once and got scared off after that happened to her.

Insanely large mana resources, but trouble accessing and using it properly.

Immortal but not invulnerable. Very weak and squishy. Heals at only just noticeably faster than normal for humans.

Able to accidentally summon large bursts of fire around her under intense stress or fear.

She has extreme pyrophobia from the witch burning that even sealing away all those related memories couldn’t get rid of. The slightest bit of flame- even those produced by herself- causes her to bolt from the room and get away from the fire at all costs.

Has a natural talent for necromancy, but doesn’t have any conscious experience with anything bigger than a mouse. It was unintentional at first, where she just wanted a friend so badly that anything that died near her would instantly zombify. After realizing she was doing it Gambit started collecting the corpses of mice that died in her house and started practicing necromancy on her own. Gambit’s zombies are as sentient as they were in life, at least at first, as their intelligence diminishes the more their brains rot. Gambit can force her will on them, and they will passively be inclined to do so in the first place, but she doesn’t like doing it and more or less lets them do their own thing… which isn’t much due to lack of intelligence. Her undead aren’t contagious.

Can make a contract to be a familiar to someone. Very inexperienced though, and would require training on both sides to do efficiently. Familiar contracts are formed through exchanging parts of their souls. The larger amounts exchanged, the more powerful and intimate the resulting connection. A large enough piece often results in a mental copy of the other person existing in the receivers’ consciousness. Gambit has a mental copy of Deus and her Father Fioran from this in her soul.

Once she has reached Eleven years of age, she’ll undergo what is basically demon puberty. Her horns will grow out along with a tail and wings. Despite getting wings already from the bat features, Gambit will still gain a pair. Her demon form will completely change as well. All these things’ appearances are heavily influenced by her CR and the things they are associated with along with her mental state.

Inventory: The clothes on her back and her diary.

Feature Type: Vampire Bat features, which include bat wings, even bigger fangs then she already has, and huge bat ears.

What are your plans with this character? Gambit will likely attempt to start up a potion selling stall. Her crappy magic control can allow for accidental curses and can be used to kick start or cause events if needed by the mods. I give full permission to have Gambit accidentally cause trouble of the magical variety. She has no street-smarts to think of, so she’s likely to trust the wrong people. If anyone is needed to do something stupid or screw something up, Gambit is yours to use. She wants to stay out of trouble and make friends, and is likely to try and live as normal a life she can, sans her potion making.

Gambit is missing around a years’ worth of memories due to them being sealed away by Fioran since Gambit had become more or less mentally traumatized to the point of uselessness. Said trauma stems from Gambit sneaking out of the house while her parents were away on ‘important business’ to see a caravan that was passing through. She got caught by one of the villagers though, which startled her and caused the illusion she put up to shatter. This was proof of witchcraft already and when they saw her horns… well. The mole she used to have under her right eye was seen as further proof as a devil’s mark. Her albinism didn't exactly help matters either.

Gambit attempted to escape the resulting mob, but her being practically blind didn’t do her any favors, as she ran into things every few seconds. She eventually got caught once she tripped and was grabbed. Out of sheer panic Gambit’s magic acted up and summoned a burst of fire around her, accidentally injuring around 7 people, one of which died from their burns. While Gambit was in shock from what she accidentally did, she got shot in the right eye by a pistol, more or less incapacitating her.

There wasn’t much of a trial afterward for obvious reasons. Though Gambit was kept in quarantine for around a week so that preparations for execution and word of said execution could be spread. They did attempt to strangle her as is usually the procedure for witches before burning, but it didn’t work as Gambit had inherited immortality from her father. Not that she knew prior to this, as there is no reliable way to test such without giving a fatal wound and seeing if she survives. Gambit’s immortality is not fully complete, as while she will stop aging physically in her twenties, her body has a slight healing factor, and can’t die by normal means, her body can still be destroyed. Her healing factor does not regenerate limbs, and anything that would scar does so at a slightly accelerated pace. So if Gambit’s body was burnt, then there would be nothing but ashes left, leaving only her soul alive. So She would more or less be restricted to the usual demonic forms of not having a physical body without being a familiar.

After several more attempts at strangulation, it was decided to just go ahead with the burning. As public executions tended to draw crowds even from other villages, there were a far larger amount of people present in the village then there would normally be. The sheer amount of negative emotions emitting form so many people all at once quickly started to raise her Mana reserves to excess levels. Out of sheer fear of herself and hurting anyone else, Gambit forcibly held in any magic that tried to spark out. This was difficult enough with the crowds gawking, jeering, and general wave of hatred directed at her. Gambit’s own emotions fueled her Mana even more as she was terrified of the situation and herself, fear as she didn’t want to die (wasn’t sure of the extent of her immortality she maybe had based on not suffocating. Or maybe she just couldn’t suffocate or be simply be hung. Magic and creatures thriving on tend to lean toward arbitrary distinctions like that.), and massive guilt due to hurting and killing people and conviction that she was the monster who needed to die for everyone to be safe.

Gambit tried to die quietly and without complaint, she really did, but her resolve to just die lasted all of two minutes after the fire was lit. Unable to hold back anymore, her magic sparked out in distressed bursts of fire, burning away her binds but further burning herself in the process along with adding to the fire.

The new added emotion of fear exploding rapidly in all at the execution along with her own personal distress at the pain finally broke Gambit as she went into fight-or-flight mode and the complete overload of energy was expended at once as Gambit unintentionally shifted into her fledgling demon form. It takes Demons centuries to even become sentient once they are spawned in the pits, and centuries more to gain any semblance of power.

Gambit consumed the souls of all present in and around the town in the rampage that followed her transformation. Rampant destruction and necromancy followed, as her naturally latent necromancy magic was boosted to instead auto zombie-fy all dead matter in a two-mile radius. The problem only escalated when armies went and died against her, further strengthening her and extending the rampage time.

It escalated to the point of lasting two whole months before Gambit’s rampage was forcibly ended by a rallied demonic army sent by the upper brass themselves. The remains of the town were wiped off the map in the ensuing battle. A handful of demons were consumed by Gambit before she was finally beaten down. Gambit’s demon form was forcibly restrained and starved of any and all energy for four months straight in the ruins of Ashwick.

During this time mass memory wipes and substitutions were done as the biggest cover up of demonic activity was done by the combined forces of hell, as otherwise the masquerade would have been blown wide open. The town of Ashwick has never existed so far as the world remembers now.
Once Gambit reverted back to her human form, she was promptly whisked away to a cramped holding cell in hell, where Fioran- who was already busy running damage control among other things- was negotiating with the courts for her to not be locked away for all eternity.

It took six whole months for her release to be negotiated for. During this time Fioran brought in another of his half-demon offspring, Fault, a 14 year old half-demon. Fioran had been so busy controlling the situation with Gambit, that he forgot to check on Fault and his father Klein (Fioran had been the mother in this case.) a warlock who lived in a small cabin near the Great Lakes. To cut a long story short, Fioran forgot to return and bring food and healing, as Klein had been gravely wounded in the last mission Fioran had dragged him on. An agent of one of Fioran’s many, many, many demons he’d backstabbed in the course of his existence then went and killed the incapacitated Klein.

When Fault tried to intervene, he got gutted and left for dead. Fault survived though, due to inheriting Fioran’s regenerative ability, but could still starve to death, so had to eat Klein’s corpse to survive. Fault gained the Wendigo curse and underwent the painful transformation, ending up as a half-demon Wendigo. Fioran was aware of when this happened, but didn’t intervene as he was A. busy rallying enough troops to stop Gambits rampage. B. Didn’t really care about Fault as he barely qualified as a half-demon and had little to no potential C. Was dumb as a rock D. He named him Fault for a reason, mistake was too obvious. And E. If Fault gained the Wendigo curse that was native to the area, that and the trauma from the whole situation would massively increase his potential usefulness.

As to how this relates to Gambit, Fault put two and two together after hanging around the courts with Fioran for six months, and assumed that the sole reason Fioran had not intervened was because he was busy stopping Gambit’s rampage. He blamed everything on Gambit and in a rage went to her cell and attacked her. By the time Fioran arrived to break the fight up, the remains of Gambit’s right eye were completely gouged out and eaten. This along with literally everything else more or less broke any and all trust she had in Fioran along with mentally breaking her.

Since Gambit was useless in this state, once he got Gambit returned to him, Fioran sealed away all her memories from exiting the house to being returned to her Mother, who by this point had been relocated to Salem. This takes the form of an intricate seal covering Gambit’s entire back, that if damaged, will let bits and pieces of the sealed away memories leak through that are proportional to the amount the seal was damaged. Gambit was told that a rival demon ransacked the town and she was so traumatized that she begged to have the memories sealed away.
